Principal Zipkes' Important Message

Dear Cedars International Next Gen Families,

This week, the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) will be conducting a regional emergency alert system test across Central Texas.

This is only a test, but it plays an important role in keeping our community safe and prepared.

Why This Matters

This exercise is designed to:

• Confirm that emergency alert systems are working properly
• Build confidence in how emergency notifications are sent and received
• Prepare our community to recognize and respond to emergency alerts
• Encourage families to think about and create a simple disaster plan
• Identify any gaps in communication before a real emergency occurs

What You May Experience

Families may receive a test message through one or more of the following systems:

• Warn Central Texas – Local alerts via phone call, text, or email (if registered)
• Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) – Automatic alerts sent directly to your mobile device
• Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) – The national system that supports emergency messaging
• Local sirens or community alert systems

All messages will clearly indicate that they are tests. No action is required.

A Quick Family Check-In Opportunity

While this is only a test, it is a good time to ask:

• Does our family know how we will communicate during an emergency?
• Do we have updated contact information and alert settings enabled on our phones?
• Do we know where to go or what to do in case of severe weather or other emergencies?

Taking a few minutes to review these questions can make a meaningful difference.

At Cedars, the safety of our students and families remains a top priority. We regularly review and practice our own safety procedures to ensure we are prepared.

Thank you for your continued partnership.

With appreciation,
Steven Zipkes
